AFTER SPRING BREAK + THE PLAYLIST + PHYSICS DOWN THE DRAIN
After Spring Break
After Spring Break, I'll be sending you new material on Work and Conservation of Energy.
Don't worry - Mr. Bugenhagen, Mr. Damm, Mr. Restad and I are very much aware that we're
only supposed to give you about 20 min of work per day. We've done our best to make
sure not overburden you, but if you feel that the work takes you longer than it should
please let me know.
As far as grading is concerned, my plan is to send you problems; you do them on paper,
take a pic and send me the pic. The paper should have your name on it and be in your handwriting.
I don't think I'm going to do any quizzes or assessments at least for the next two school
weeks, so your grade will be based on the work you send me.
Everything will be linked here in the Corona Diary, as well as on the regular CP
and Honors pages at mrmont.com.
The Playlist
So here we are with 300 songs left in the playlist and no way to play them
for you.
Or is there a way??
I've never used Spotify, for reasons that maybe I'll talk about another time.
But now I have a reason to use it. I'll be creating weekly playlists based on the big
playlist. I'll link them here, and at the regular CP and Honors pages on mrmont.com.

Enjoy!

Great song with an excellent but simple guitar solo at 4:35. It's not a virtuoso guitar performance, but it's right for the song. Never think that things have to be super-amazing to be really good. |

Physics Down the Drain
So I heard that water goes down the drain clockwise in
the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the
southern hemisphere. Or is it the other way around?
No matter, because it's wrong. We talked about
how spin direction is conserved if there's
not outside torque, and how when
mass pulls inward, angular velocity increases.
What are the chances that the random motion of
all the H2O molecules clockwise versus
counterclockwise in a sink or tub exactly cancel out?
Never happens!
So whatever the net rotation of the water is takes
over and becomes faster as the water's mass goes
inward toward the drain.
Try this experiment. Put some water in
a sink. Give the water a very gentle swirl
clockwise. Then let the water out of the sink.
Notice that the water close to the drain is
spinning quickly the same way you swirled it.
Repeat with a gentle counter-clockwise swirl
and see if it still works.
Now don't go sticking your hand in the toilet
to give it a gentle swirl and repeat the
experiment because it won't work.
The openings that let water into the bowl
point in a direction already to make sure the water
spins. Engineers figured out a long time ago
that spinning water helps the poopy go down better.
Yes, I said poopy. Did you smile? And why are
bodily functions funny, anyway??
Enjoy your "break"!
