IS THIS THE APOCALYPSE? + 3RD MARKING PERIOD PHYSICS ASSIGNMENTS + WORTH A CLOSER LOOK
Is This the Apocalypse?
I had a long text-conversation with a friend over the weekend. She
was worried because an old high school friend of hers was scaring her
with apocalypse talk. She asked me if I thought it was the
apocalypse.
I asked her if the 1918 Flu Pandemic was the apocalypse. Or the Black
Plague of the 1300s. Or the Justinian Plague in ancient times. Each of
these was much, much worse than the current situation.
I think the reason some people are having these apocalyptic thoughts
is not because of the virus itself. It is (in my opinion) due to
the large scale measures that we are taking to slow down its spread: the
shut-downs, the stay-at-home orders, etc. (Of course, a
steady diet of 24-hour news doesn't help either.)
These are definitely unprecendented steps that society is taking.
But the irony is that this may seem like the apocalypse precisely because
we're taking steps to prevent this from being much worse than it
could be. This may be the first time in history
that almost the entire human race is responding pro-actively to
a disease BEFORE it gets out of control. That's reason to feel
optimistic.
Are things going to change as a result of this? Yes, undoubtedly.
But more about that
another day.

Worth a Closer Look
Saguaro with hair, Desert Botanical Garden, Arizona, 2019.
While in Arizona last year, we visited the
Desert Botanical Garden near Phoenix.
It was 100+ degrees, but we were so glad we visited.
We saw plenty of Saguaro cactuses
(cacti, if you prefer).
You always see them in cartoons.
They're bigger than you think, though, and many of them are very old.
Apparently, they typically don't get "arms" until they're
50 to 75 yrs old. Some never get arms.
I thought this one looked like it had
a cool hair style.
