Week 9

I made this image back in the late 90s using Microsoft Paint Brush, soon after we got teacher desktop computers.
Slow down and enjoy life.
It's not only the
scenery you miss by
going too fast -
you also miss the
sense of where you
are going and why.

RECOMMENDATIONS + OPTIONAL DU/WOW REPLACEMENT + PHOTOSHOP DISASTERS + END OF PLAYLIST

RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendation requests are coming in! I'm happy to write them for you. Good recommendation etiquette is to ask first before putting it in Naviance.

OPTIONAL DU/WOW REPLACEMENT

One of the things I wanted to do with you is show the the ingredients of musical instruments and show you how you could build your own from scratch.

This assignment is optional. If you are happy with your grade there is no need to do it. On the other hand, if you do this assignment I will go back and retroactively make one of your weeks a DU/WOW week.

Your assignment is to build a musical instrument out of household materials, and to answer questions about it. A simple google search for homemade instruments will turn up lots and lots of ideas.

Record a video of you playing the instrument and answering these four questions:
  1. All musical instruments begin with a random vibration. Which is it with your instrument? Plucking, hitting, or blowing are typical.
  2. All musical instruments have something to hold the sound waves. What is it with your instrument? Strings, a tube of air, or a stretched membrane (drum head) are typical.
  3. All musical instruments have a body to resonate with the waves. The size and mass of the body determine whether it will resonate with high pitches, medium pitches or low pitches. Which category does your instrument fall under? Typical high pitched instruments are small-bodied like flutes and ukuleles. Typical low pitched instruments are large and/or massive like tubas and bass violins.
  4. All musical instruments have to have a way to adjust pitch to make different notes. How is it done on your instrument? Typical ways are shortening or lengthening the string by putting a finger down or lifting it, tightening or loosening the string, shortening or lengthening the tube of air by opening holes or closing them.

PHOTOSHOP DISASTER - ANSWERS

Photoshopping is rife in fashion magazines and advertising. But every once in a while there's a goof. Some are more obvious than others. Here are the answers.
Although the umbrella has a reflection, the person does not.
Whose hand is on her arm???
Count the fingers!
Another body-less hand on her shoulder.
Someone must have re-used the ad for the 4GB card, but forgot to change the reflection.
Legs don't connect to body?
Miraculous gravity-defying water.
If you can't get real diversity, photoshop it!
If you were a church official, it might not look good to have a very expensive watch. The watch was photoshopped out, but not its reflection.
No hind legs?
Three armed man??
This caused much embarrassment for the University of Wisconsin. On their undergraduate application someone had the bright idea to photoshop in an African American in the sea of white faces. Nothing says lack of diversity like the fact that you had to photoshop it!

One thing alone I charge you. As you live, believe in life! Always human beings will live and progress to greater, broader and fuller life. The only possible death is to lose belief in this truth simply because the great end comes slowly, because time is long.
Last message (written 26 June, 1957) read at his funeral, 1963.
