Why Not Through Evolution Or Chance? Why couldn't God or an intelligent designer operate through evolution or chance processes, and why should we think that the empirical world can provide proof of the existence of God or an intelligent designer? As far as I can tell, the belief that God or an intelligent designer operates through evolution or chance processes and that one shouldn't look for proof of the existence of God or an intelligent designer in the empirical world are held by many people. On this view, supernatural explanation of events and scientific explanation of events do not operate on the same plane. Possibly for you, natural science can provide the descriptive 'how' of things, while the religious experience can provide the more satsifying 'why'.I think that such a view is entirely compatible with both the workings and explanations of science and with religious belief, and it leaves us with the happy result that science does not insinuate itself into questions of religious belief and religion does not insinuate itself into science texbooks --- either of which would be a gross misunderstanding of the purpose of the other. If you agree with me and think that science and belief in God or an intelligent designer can peacefully, even fruitfully coexist, go to Fruitful Coexistence for the story of a great scientist who thought so too.
But perhaps you disagree and would like to see supernatural explanation incorporated into science; if so, go to Supernatural Explanation in Science.
